Pilotage refers to activities related to navigation of vessels in which the pilot acts as advisor to the vessel's master and an expert on local waters and their navigation. Pilotage’s purpose is to enhance ship traffic’s safety and prevent environmental damage that vessel traffic generates.
E-Pilotage refers to measures undertaken to digitize and develop different phases of pilotage services to make them safer and efficient. The key areas of development include the collection, production, and processing of information related to pilotage services.
At times when the weather of port is bad or vessel size is huge, pilots find it tough to board the ship. In the SOLAS Convention, Chapter V mentions the requirements that are given to solve this issue. Apart from that IMO resolution also covers steps to address issues such as pilot transfer arrangement, and embarking and disembarking of large vessels. IMO has also adopted a Recommendation on pilot transfer arrangements and approved Required Boarding Arrangement for Pilots. Credits- Garima Gunjan
